Ways to Host a Religious Ceremony if You're an Interfaith Couple

Interfaith marriages are becoming more and more common, and just because you're blending two beliefs in your union doesn't mean you can't hold a religious ceremony. Still, the rituals get a bit stickier when mixing traditions. Here, options for hosting a religious interfaith ceremony.

First and foremost, if you wish to hold a religious interfaith ceremony then you must make sure that wherever you're planning to host your ceremony, it's okay to mix faiths during the service. Not every chapel, church, or temple will be okay with this, so it's your job to double-check. Next, you should meet with officiants from both faiths to discuss your wishes for the ceremony and how they can accommodate. It's even possible to have them both officiate the ceremony, especially if you plan to have your future children raised as a part of both religions.

Some religions may not allow you to incorporate both traditions, so you can always do two ceremonies, one right after the other. If one partner is willing to forego their faith and choose one type of service, that's their choice. If you're not married to the idea of a religious ceremony, you can always do a civil ceremony to avoid any possible upset. There's also, always, the option of finding a third accepting faith to ring in your union together. Of course, like anything else, this is all completely up to you, your faith, and how much your place of worship or officiant is willing to budge. Since interfaith marriages are growing more and more common, many religious leaders are likely to be more accustomed to this practice than they were in the past, especially if you belong to a more reformed sect.
