Unlike many celebrities who financially benefit from the sale of their wedding photos to tabloid magazines, Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman plan to divide their wedding-day proceeds among various organizations, including the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and The Girl Effect. One such beneficiary is Freedom to Marry, a coalition committed to fighting for same-gender marriage equality, representing only the latest act of advocacy from Hathaway for the LGBT community.

Accepting the Ally Award from the Human Rights Campaign in 2008, the actress spoke for the first time about her gay brother and emphasized the connection she feels to the wider community: "I don't consider myself just an ally to the LGBT community, I consider myself your family. And so, I'm doing what we should all do with our families—I'm loving you, I support you, I completely accept you as you are, as I hope you do me, and if anyone ever tries to hurt you, I'm going to give them hell."
