By the morning after any wedding, guests should be pleasantly exhausted by the revelry of the occasion — but hungover guests at the ceremony itself do not make for a particularly lively affair. Our etiquette experts weigh in on how to plan post-rehearsal dinner festivities without leaving your guests bleary-eyed for the wedding weekend.

In order to make sure your guests are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for your wedding day, make sure any activities the night before your wedding limit alcohol and end well before midnight. Guests who are sleep-deprived and hungover will not make an attentive or celebratory audience for your big day. Instead of scheduling a crazy bar crawl, plan a more low-key event that encourages guests to actively bond and interact with one another. If your crowd enjoys learning new skills, arrange a dance lesson or casino night with various card games to try.

A game night with a clear start and finish will win over your guests and afford the opportunity for introductions amongst those who aren't yet acquainted, without cutting into precious sleeping hours. Live music also tends to be universal crowd-pleaser if you have enough room in your budget to secure a band for an hour, post-rehearsal dinner. If your wedding is al fresco or takes place in a setting with ample natural beauty, consider asking guests to join you for a sunset wine-tasting or stargazing date before they turn in.
