When it comes to weddings there are plenty of guides to dress shopping, vendor vetting, and etiquette adhering, but there's one category of instruction that's a bit neglected: how to enjoy yourself at a wedding.

Maybe you're thinking, "Well it's simple, show up, hit the bar, and dodge small talk,"— which is not incorrect — but we'd like to argue there's a bit more to it. Here are six important steps on how to enjoy a wedding, whether you're the bride, bridesmaid, or a barely acquainted plus one.

1. Have a little snack
Logic tells us that hungry people are grumpy people and grumpy people can be a blister on an otherwise wonderful wedding experience. To avoid getting "hangry" nibble on a healthy and filling snack before the ceremony.

2. Wear comfortable shoes
No, your Ugg boots will never be allowed at a wedding ceremony, but if you find yourself choosing between sexy and uncomfortable or subtle but wearable, take the comfortable route. A long night of dancing requires footwear that won't make you want to cut your feet off.

3. Run early
One absolute truth in the world of wedding planning is that there will always be hiccups (metaphorical, unless the open bar get a bit too much attention...). Take this lesson into account and pad your schedule with extra time. Simply put, less stress equals more enjoyment.

4. Put down your phone
To fully enjoy any life experience, presence is paramount. Put down the phone. Instagram will still be there tomorrow morning.

5. Indulge
A wedding is not the time to count calories or worry about an impending hangover. Live in the moment: scarf down that truffle mac and cheese, say yes to an extra touch of champagne, and never, ever turn down dessert.

6. Practice gratitude
For many of us, gratitude is an active choice, not a natural inclination. Choose to notice the details — the thoughtful welcome gift the bride put together, or the gracious pep talk from your wedding coordinator — and say thanks. Gratitude is the ultimate mood booster.
