Sentimental wedding venue ideas

Choosing a sentimental wedding location or venue is nothing new — couples often marry at a spot with special meaning and memories, like where they took their first vacation together or where they first met. Not only is this extra symbolic, but it's also a nostalgic alternative for couples who may prefer not to marry in the bride's hometown, as is often the custom. Although no one in either family may live at the wedding site, it should have enough of an attraction that a substantial number of your wedding guests will want to make the trip. We brainstormed some etiquette expert-approved ideas for sentimental journey locations you may want to consider!

A College Campus
Return to your alma mater to relive good times. Perhaps plan the wedding celebration around your class reunion and include already-scheduled events so college friends, who are guests, can enjoy their own sentimental journey. Rent out one wing or dorm so everyone can stay together, but consider getting a special hotel suite for yourself to prepare for the ceremony. Hire the school's chamber quartet to play during the ceremony; a band to accompany you, the bridal party, and guests from the chapel to the reception.

A Summer Home or Family Vacation Spot
Return to the beaches of your childhood summers. Plan a rerun of past pleasures — clambakes, volleyball games, sand-castle and fishing competitions — as well as nostalgic visits to childhood haunts, such as an amusement park or zoo.

Summer Camp
Rent cabins for the returning and visiting campers, and arrange to have meals catered in the dining hall. Invite friends to sing old camp songs — provide the words and sheet music for all — and stage a canoe race or a midnight swim.
