It's a tale as old as time: A car riding off into the sunset with coffee cans scratching the concrete behind it. And this traditional goodbye to your guests as newly branded Mr. and Mrs. is just as important as your entrance at the ceremony. From who decorates the car to alternative vehicles and who should be in charge of choosing it, our etiquette experts answer all of your getaway car questions.

Who's supposed to decorate the getaway car?
Traditionally, the best man and groomsmen are in charge of decorating the getaway car — often with the words "Just Married" written on the back window or sometimes with more elaborate banners, floral arrangements, cans, or calligraphed signs. It always makes for a fun post-wedding surprise! While coming up with a creative way to decorate the getaway vehicle isn't likely high up on every couple's wedding to-do list, it definitely is a fun and festive way to end the night and embark on your new lives together (plus, it makes for a great photo op!).

If you want to depart from the reception in a decorated car, gather all of the necessary supplies (and print out an inspiration photo, if you can!); then, hand everything over to the groomsmen at the rehearsal dinner. You'll also have to let them know logistics like where and when they'll have access to the car, and because they may need to get inside the vehicle to secure some of the decoration elements, be prepared to give them a spare car key.

You don't necessarily have to getaway in a car.
From horse or subway to a vespa and even a hot air balloon there are plenty of creative ways to make your escape and both literally and figuratively ride off into the sunset. Go with what feels unique and special to you as a couple!

Let him choose the getaway car.
Most guys have an opinion about this and may even want to handle the vehicle situation entirely. You might be surprised at how much he's thought about the type of vehicle that will take you from church to reception, or whisk you away to your hotel later that night. He might be a limo guy, or maybe he wants to surprise you with an antique Rolls Royce. Let him!
