The Dos and Don'ts of Wedding Flowers

Wedding flowers are, and practically always have been, a centerpiece of nuptials. Flowers symbolize love and romance, have been used in weddings for centuries, and have delightful aromas that were once believed to ward off evil spirits. Nowadays, they also speak to a couple's style and sensibilities: Some go all out and bedeck every surface with bouquets and lush blooms, while others get creative and sub pricier flowers with fake lookalikes or feathers. Whatever your floral philosophy, it's important to keep some classic dos and don't in mind as you plan for your big day. Read these etiquette expert-approved pointers and get blooming!

Do create a visual backdrop for your wedding vows. Rented plants and columns instantly make transform nondescript rooms.

Don't overdecorate. Tasteful, well-placed table arrangements impress without cluttering or overwhelming the view.

Do opt to carry a manageable bouquet. Heavy, awkward bouquets are impossible to clutch gracefully.

Don't consider heat-sensitive blooms for summer weddings. Quick-to-wilt gardenias, lily of the valley, and wildflowers look limp before the "I dos" are done.

Do have flowers delivered before the ceremony well misted and boxed with cellophane, or waxed paper wrappings, to maintain moisture.

Don't forget to assign a reliable friend to double-check flower arrivals and their condition.
