We're practically still in disbelief that avowed bachelor George Clooney proposed to girlfriend Amal Alamuddin this past weekend, but details keep rolling in to confirm the news. Case in point: There's brand-new information on the engagement ring and how Clooney popped the question.
People obtained exclusive photos of the newly-betrothed duo at a private dinner on April 27, just five days after Clooney's proposal. Alamuddin wore her enormous engagement ring to the dinner, where they dined with Cindy Crawford and her husband.
Alamuddin's new bling is an estimated 7-carat emerald-cut ethically mined diamond flanked by tapered baguettes. The platinum-set ring is a perfect choice for an accomplished lawyer about to marry the king of Hollywood — it's jaw-dropping in size, but still elegant.

And it turns out Clooney is surprisingly traditional: People reports that the actor got down on one knee after visiting Alamuddin's family in Dubai in March. The visit was obviously a sterling success, given the ensuing proposal.
"They found George very easy to get along with, cool," a family member tells People of the meeting. "They felt at ease with him immediately."
Though Clooney and Alamuddin only started dating a few months ago, Clooney quickly realized he had found the one after a string of gorgeous girlfriends.
On Monday, Alamuddin's law firm offered its congratulations to the Oxford-educated lawyer. "The barristers and staff of Doughty Street Chambers offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms. Amal Alamuddin, a member of Chambers, and Mr. George Clooney on their engagement to be married," the firm stated.
And now, with solid proof that Clooney put a ring on it, we can only hope that wedding planning is underway!
