We've all received our fair share of impractical wedding favors that wind up going unused. So is it really necessary to give them out to guests at your own wedding? Our wedding etiquette experts are here to answer your favor questions in our daily post.
Do we have to give wedding favors?
Wedding favors aren't necessary—especially cheesy tchotchkes like plastic photo frames and potpourri sachets. Favors certainly are an additional expense and if you're on a tight budget, it's perfectly fine to skip them. But there are ways to be economical about wedding favors. And when they're done right, they are a thoughtful way to thank your guests for sharing your wedding day with you. Consider combining the favors with something you'll be giving your guests anyway, like a wedding ceremony program that doubles as a fan. Or, if you're having a photobooth at the reception, the strip of photos can serve as a take-home favor. Alternatively, if you have family members that are known for their delicious baked goods or other homemade treats (like, cookies, jam, or chocolates), perhaps you can convince them to make a huge batch that you can package and offer to guests as a parting thank you. Lastly, more and more couples are going the charitable donation route: Choose your favorite charity (maybe one that's meaningful to your family) and make a donation in lieu of traditional favors. Then, at the wedding, display a sign at the welcome table explaining your donation to guests.
