One Couple's Urban-Meets-Rustic Wedding in Beacon, NY

It is only fitting that James Clause, 34, proposed to his then-girlfriend Megan Johnston, 29, with a Christmas stocking in hand. He was, after all, asking his bride to be the future "Mrs. Clause." But these two bankers decided to skip the holiday season in favor of a summer wedding.

The University of Delaware graduates opted for a blue-and-yellow palette to match their alma mater's colors. "I even had navy and gold shoes to tie into the theme," Megan says. And while Mr. and Mrs. Clause married on June 8, 2013, at The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls in Beacon, NY, they didn't leave the holiday spirit out of their day entirely. They played up their festive new name by asking guests to share photos on Instagram with the hashtag #xmasinjune and dancing in matching Santa hats embroidered with "Mr. Clause" and "Mrs. Clause" during their reception.

While the bride planned on wearing a pair of Kate Spade studs down the aisle, a surprise visitor had other jewels in mind. "Right before I went to go down the aisle, my 92-year-old grandma arrived at the bridal suite, where she gave me a pair of antique earrings that belonged to her mother," Megan says.

Her cobalt blue sandals featured gold-and-blue fans across the toes.

After trying on dress after dress, Megan found "the one" in this strapless Ugo Zaldi gown, a look that's layered all the way to the hem with strips of fabric. "This was probably the twentieth dress I tried on, but the first one that made my mom, friend (and me) cry," she says. "I brought it home that day, where it stayed in my closet for a year until our wedding!"

The bride and her four attendants carried white bouquets of peonies and roses, accented with yellow for a fresh, clean look. Though it was the bright billy balls that were the bride's favorite bloom. Megan pinned two brooches onto the navy-and-white grosgrain ribbon wrapped around the stem of her bouquet for her "something borrowed" — one was from her mother, the other from a friend.

The groom wore a navy suit with a light blue-and-yellow striped tie from J. Crew. His Calla lily boutonniere was wrapped in soft yarn.

James and Megan took to the streets of Beacon to show off their wedding-day finery. His socks and her shoes flaunted their school colors.

Megan wanted something bright, fresh and fun for her four bridesmaids to wear in June. The sweetheart neckline and layers of their lemon yellow dresses by Coren Moore helped tie together the bridal party's look with the bride's column gown.

"I don't think I had a vision going into the wedding, but as I researched and began making choices, it came to life," Megan says. "I ended up with a rustic style wedding with a modern touch provided by the venue."

When Megan and James visited The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls, the venue was still under construction, but that didn't stop them from falling in love. "It's full of exposed brick, original wood beams, and is in the perfect setting right next to a waterfall," Megan says. "Even though it was still a construction site when we signed the contract, we knew it was the perfect choice for us."

The couple said their vows in front of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the waterfalls. With readings from the gospel and Robert Fulghum's poem "The Union," Megan and James stood under an arch beautifully covered with delicate white baby's breath to offset the brick.

Manhattan ruled the dinner décor with table numbers, escort cards and different photo from the city on each table.

As guests arrived, grilled lemonade was served in mason jars with yellow-and-blue chevron paper straws. Guests were invited to document the event and share their snaps with the couple via Instagram.

Light linens matched the airy feel of the reception space, awash in sunlight. The 140 guests chose from black truffle cod or filet mignon for their main course. "One of our favorite parts of the planning process was being able to try all the different food," Megan says. "The food featured all local, seasonal ingredients. We still get compliments on it to this day."

Every table featured a different centerpiece, ranging from wooden boxes to galvanized buckets. Hydrangeas, stock flowers, and roses in white and yellow were accented with ivy and dusty miller leaves.

The bride and groom dined at a sweetheart table decorated with lush flowers and a vintage-inspired sign.

Guests signed balloons on a poster with the theme from the movie Up.

The tiered layers of frosting on the wedding cake matched the texture of Megan's dress. The florist added flowers (including ranunculus and Megan's fave: billy balls!) to cascade down the side. Guests took home sprinkle-topped cake pops as a sweet late-night treat.

Megan and James danced to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" as their first dance. After the wedding, they honeymooned on the Hawaiian islands of Kauai and Maui. As for her advice to other brides-to-be, Megan recommends to ask your groom for help. "Work as a team," Megan says. "A lot of the planning we did was together, and I'm so glad to always have felt like I had a partner in the planning (even if my vote was the one that always won!)"
