As much as you want your wedding day to be perfect, there are plenty of external elements (and not just last-minute groomsmen mishaps!) that could make what should be a magical day a headache. Sadly, Hurricanes, lost loved ones or unexpected illnesses pop up when you least expect them. So, although these extreme situations can be highly unlikely, should you shell out for wedding insurance?

Short answer: Yes. Wedding insurance is like your favorite Wellington rain boots—they feel silly and unnecessary when the sun's out, but when a downpour hits, you're hella glad you've got 'em on. Policies start at $95, which gets you $1 million in liability coverage and protects you if, say, someone is injured on the dance floor. You can also insure against cancellation due to extreme weather (Hurricane Sandy, a death in the family, or a bride or groom called to military service. "There isn't a lot we don't cover on the cancellation side," says Robert Nuccio of WedSure, a major provider.

Add-ons for lost, damaged, or stolen dresses, rings, and gifts, as well as vendor deposits (handy if—gulp—the caterer doesn't show), can push the price north of $1,000. Wendy Kidd of the American Association of Certified Wedding Planners suggests getting protection for only those things you feel are risky, like hiring your cousin in art school to take photos. "Some policies will pay to have the wedding re-created so a photographer can capture images again," she says. As for getting your families to agree to a redo, that's on you.
