Though getting married means you're starting a new family, you still need to deal with the problems that come with your immediate family members. How do you handle your guest list and wedding invitations when you have a distant, divorced dad? Our wedding etiquette experts are here to answer your wedding guest questions in our daily post.
My parents are divorced and I'd like to invite my paternal grandparents, but not my father, to the wedding. How can I do this gracefully?
Divorce creates tricky situations. Unless, though, there is a serious, long-standing rift between you and your dad, and unless your day would be ruined by his mere presence, it's best to invite him—whether or not Gram and Gramps are on the list. If you just can't have your father there, inviting his parents will put them in the difficult position of having to choose between being loyal to their son and to their grandchild. If you decide not to invite your father, call your grandparents and let them know the situation, and make a plan for you and your husband to get together with them after your honeymoon.
