Wedding traditions are tricky to navigate. Our experts weigh in on who should walk you down the aisle, and more, in our daily wedding etiquette post.

Both my father and grandfather have passed away, and I've never been close to my stepfather, but my mother says he should escort me down the aisle. Can I walk down the aisle by myself?

It's up to you. It's not uncommon for a bride to walk down the aisle solo, but if this is going to cause a rift between you and your mother (think ahead to next Thanksgiving), you should carefully weigh your decision. As a compromise, your stepdad could walk with you partway down the aisle, then take a seat when he reaches his pew, rather than escorting you all the way to the altar. Alternatively, you could have both your mother and your stepfather escort you, or Mom could walk you alone.
